Version History
A running log of improvements and fixes to Drive Browser.
New Features
- AI Image Search — type a description like "sunset on the beach" or "woman in red dress" and Drive Browser finds matching photos using on-device AI (CLIP). No internet required after the one-time model download.
- AI results appear in the main Search tab alongside filename matches — filename matches first, then AI-ranked results with a similarity score badge.
- Generate Tags button in the Gallery view pre-computes AI embeddings for all thumbnails on a drive so AI search is instant.
- AI model files (~577 MB) are downloaded once from GitHub and cached locally — no re-download on subsequent launches.
- AI Search sensitivity slider in Settings — drag toward "More results" or "Tighter matches" to control how strict the AI matching is.
- Automatic update check on launch — if a new version is available, a What's New dialog appears. Windows users can download and install the update in one click.
- After generating thumbnails for a drive, Drive Browser now prompts you to generate AI Tags immediately — with the option to run it in the background while you keep working.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed: Gallery tab now automatically refreshes and shows thumbnails after clicking "Generate Thumbnails Now" — previously required closing and reopening the tab.
- Fixed (Mac): AI image search now works correctly in the Mac build. The AI model was silently falling back to a third-party download source instead of loading from the local cache.
- Fixed (Mac): "Check for Updates" in Settings no longer shows "Could not connect" — SSL certificates are now correctly bundled in the Mac app.
Bug Fix
- Fixed: on Windows, user data (catalog database and settings) is now correctly stored in the standard AppData location, ensuring the app works properly when installed to Program Files.
New Features
- Thumbnail Gallery — generate and browse image and video thumbnails for any cataloged drive. Thumbnails are stored in the catalog so you can browse them even when the drive is unplugged.
- Gallery tab shows a scrollable grid of thumbnails. Right-click any thumbnail to jump to its location in the Browse tab or copy its path.
- Image files now show a photo icon in the Browse tree, making them easy to spot at a glance.
- Search filters — narrow results by file type, size range, and date range directly in the Search tab.
- Export search results to CSV with one click.
- Set Location — right-click any media card to record where the physical drive is stored (e.g. "Box 3 in the closet", "Desk drawer").
- View as Gallery — open the thumbnail gallery directly from the media card right-click menu.
- Search results now let you jump straight to a file in the Browse tab.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed: Set Location dialog silently failed to save — now saves correctly and shows a clear error if something goes wrong.
- Fixed: Gallery file paths now show relative to the drive root (e.g. /Photos/beach.jpg) with no drive letter, since the letter can change when drives are reconnected.
Mac Improvements
- Tabs now always appear flush-left on macOS, matching the Windows layout.
- Folder expand/collapse arrows in the Browse tab are now clearly visible in dark mode.
- The "Open Database Folder" button in Settings now correctly opens Finder on macOS.
New Features
- Font size controls (A− / A+) added to the Browse tab, letting you increase or decrease the file tree text size.
- Font size controls also added to the Search results pane.
- Your preferred font size is saved and restored automatically on every launch.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed: Changing the theme no longer resets the font size back to the default.
- Fixed: Search result cards now correctly update their colors when switching themes.
- Fixed: Font size preference was not applied on launch even when correctly saved.
New Features
- Empty media library now shows a helpful graphic with an arrow pointing to the Scan New Media button, so new users know exactly where to start.
- Incomplete scan detection — if the app crashes or is force-quit mid-scan, the affected media card will show an amber warning badge and a right-click Rescan option when you relaunch.
- Check for Updates button in Settings now actually connects to the server and compares your version against the latest release.
- New "Deleting..." progress dialog with animation shown when removing a large media catalog, so the app never appears frozen.
- Right-click context menu now includes a Rescan option on any media card, opening a quick dialog to re-run a full scan.
Improvements
- Scan speed is now always Fast — the speed selector has been removed. Fast mode scans up to 4× quicker with no meaningful downside for typical usage.
- Blue accent line added directly under the tab bar for a cleaner visual separation between navigation and content.
- "Drive Already in Catalog" dialog now clearly explains that the same physical drive was detected by serial number, even if a different name was entered.
- Scan dialog is more compact now that the speed selector has been removed.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed: Cancelling a scan and immediately starting a new one would incorrectly show "Scan Cancelled" without actually running the new scan.
- Fixed: "Check for Updates" button previously always said "You are running the latest version" regardless of actual version.
